I'm still analyzing last year's expenses, and already at number seven I'm feeling like it's one I can't do anything about - property taxes.
Our taxes are actually reasonable by some standards, since there aren't a ton of infrastructure projects going on in the neighbourhood. We pay just over $3000 a year, or $260/month, which we can usually spread out over 8 payments.
We're not interested in moving out of our home when we're retired, although I guess our opinions could change. I like the idea of hosting foreign students for some part of the year, enough to pay for the property taxes. I'm a teacher with ESL qualifications, so I think we'd be a desirable host family.

That is the one thing about my city that totally sux!
My taxes this year will be right about $3000.
However, the summer taxes (which were due 9-2-08) had to be paid in full in the amount of $2850+. The remaining $150(ish) is considered winter taxes (which will be due 12-31-08) and also must be paid in full.
Obviously, the $150 isn't a big deal, BUT, being able to break up the payments on the $2850 would be nice.

If you think your taxes are really out of line, and if you have the time to do a little research at town hall to see what other comparable homes are being taxed at, you could request a hearing at the assessor's office. Just like with showing up in court to challenge traffic tickets, you stand a good chance of winning some concessions.
